Fun story - thanks. I grew up with very little music in the home and wanted something more like your story for my family. My kids have also been exposed to a wide range of musical genres since they were small (in fact, our favorite road trip games are invented around music), and I've made it a point to lean into their music as well. I'm pretty impressed with the general openness and musical literacy that I see in my kids' friends... when I was growing up, you were either in the pop, rock, or metal tribe or you were an outcast, and I tried to straddle all of them. It's fun to have no boundaries and still be expanding horizons.
There is a good Biweekly podcast, The History of Rock Music in 500 Songs, that covers the begin of popular records in the 1920ies to now (he is now at Episode 170 - Hey Jude).
All the songs you mentioned here are covered, and he gives good background.
The Drifters and Fats Domino are covered over several episodes, since they were so fundamental to modern music.
Thank you for this post. I love that I was influenced in so many musical genres growing up and I love that my kids had a similar upbringing. And I love that my adult kids have been feeding me new musical discoveries for several years now. Maybe 10 years ago my 10-11 year old daughter got in the car after being with friends and excitedly said, “I found a song I think you’ll love.” She cued it up on Spotify and played “Tangerine” by Led Zeppelin. She was a little discouraged at first when I told her I had been listening to that since I was her age.
But thank you for the stupidly happy songs because that genre has been woefully missing from my influences- until now!
Jeez. memory lane all the way. Had an older cousin that kept us kids up to date on the songs of that time. Daniele, a huge thank you from my mouth to your ears.
Nice. I'm over here in Turkey. My friends back in the homeland started buying records again. If the wifey and I move to the US I am probably going to have to join the club and buy a player. My bro has at least 50 records that haven't been played in 10 years.
Yeah man that sucks. You are a lucky dude. Your Mom and Dad were very interesting and inspiring people. It led to the birth of Thee Bad Ass Historian you are today. HOF is the SHIT!!!
Great playlist, thanks Daniele!
very welcome! :)

Well done, Franco.

Do you still have a record player at the crib? While we are at it do you still have a cassette tape player?
Yes record player. I don't think cassette
